How to Install Plumbing in Your Home

Plumbing generally starts with the water source which travels through the pipes into the thousands of water mains in a building. Each unit has a shut-off valve and water meter. The valve controls the flow of the water into your home,

Water goes through supply pipes that are connected to your bathrooms, kitchen and service yard taps, water heater, sinks, tubs, washing machine, dishwasher, hoses, and other fixtures that require water. There is also the drain system which takes out the wastewater from your home. It is made up of various drain pipes, main stack, sewer line, and the roof vent.

If you are changing a sink or a tap, which is the most frequent plumbing work that a home owner would come across, do consider these steps.

Prior to doing the plumping installation on your own, remember to prepare the following tools:
Spanner, measuring tape and silicon sealant. You may also require screwdriver and plier in some cases.

First, shut-off the water supply by turning off the valve that is leading to the tap or faucet which you are going to replace.

Next, remove your existing tap  by using the spanner to unscrew the nuts. Replace and install with a new tap.

Remember to also install the supply lines, also known as the flexible hose or a faucet connector to the incoming water supply pipe if your existing one has been used for a long period of time or it is leaking. To know the length of the connector, use your measuring tape to measure your existing one. Buying one that is slightly longer than your current is fine too.

Before the last step, ensure that all nuts are tightened properly.

Turn on water supply valve and check if the tap is working fine. Check around for any signs of water leaks.
Leaks can soak floors, damage foundations, or cause mould, which can make your home unpleasant.
Always make sure to shut off water supply before you make any adjustments to your tap installation.

Meanwhile, take a look at a cabinet damaged by a leaking tap.

If you have the same problem with your cabinet, a full replacement of the bathroom vanity cabinet would be required.
